We are pleased to announce the call for participation in the 2023 Undergraduate Project Competition. The UPC is an annual event aimed at showcasing the best senior-level research and design projects of our undergraduate students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The winners of the competition shall receive the Dr. Francis Chua Innovation Awards. The following set of prizes will be awarded for both the Research Category and the Design Category:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
(Per category)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First Prize: 50,000 pesos<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nSecond Prize: 30,000 pesos<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nFinalists: 10,000 pesos<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nCompetition mechanics:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nEligibility<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n- An individual or group project that is the output of a senior Engineering undergraduate project or thesis course (i.e. xx144, xx150, xx192, xx198, xx199 and xx200) may be entered into the competition<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n- Projects should have been completed between the start of the Midyear 2022 term to the end of the Second Semester AY 2022-2023<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n- Only one submission per project will be accepted<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n- Participants must specify whether the project will participate in either the Research Category<\/em> or the Design<\/em> Category<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
<\/em>Screening and judging<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n- There will be three levels of screening and evaluation:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n- Unit- (i.e. department- or institute-) level selection (\u2018Unit-level selection\u2019\u2019)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Selection of finalists by the College Executive Board (\u2018Selection of College finalists\u2019)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Final round, to be judged by an external panel of judges (\u2018Final round\u2019)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n- Departments and institutes are free to set their own internal screening and evaluation timetables, deadlines, methods, criteria and requirements for unit-level selection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n- A total of 30 entries per category will be evaluated by the College Executive Board starting June 30, 2023 (Friday) during the selection of College finalists. Units should select and endorse entries to the College Executive Board, through the Associate Dean for Research, on or before 5pm Thursday, June 29, 2023<\/strong>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n- Selection of College finalists by the College Executive Board will be based on the following:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n- Research Category\n
\n- Significance and Impact (40%) <\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Quality of Research (40%) <\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Quality of Presentation (20%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n- Design Category\n
\n- Usefulness (40%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Design Execution (40%) <\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Quality of Presentation (20%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n- The top five entries (finalists) in each category will be announced on July 14, 2023 (Friday). <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n- Finalists shall present their work in person in the Final Round to the Final Judging Panel on July 18, 2023 (Tuesday)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n- The winners of the UPC2023 shall be announced at the College Recognition Rites on August 1, 2023.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Submission <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n- To join the College-wide competition, participants must prepare a written abstract and a 5-8 minute video that describes their work in the most concise and effective manner, keeping in mind the evaluation criteria previously mentioned. Submissions in excess of the 8-minute limit will be disqualified.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n- Participants will submit internally and directly to their respective units. Please follow the instructions provided within your home academic unit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n- Department chairs and institute directors will endorse and submit their respective entries, using submission forms and folders to be provided by the Associate Dean for Research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n- In addition to the submitted forms, abstract and video, finalists selected by the College Executive Board will be required to prepare a poster for their final presentation to the Final Judging Panel. Considering the relatively short span of time between the announcement of the finalists (July 14) and the final judging round (July 18), we strongly suggest that participants prepare posters in advance.
