Dedicated to advancing excellence and scholarship among engineers of today and tomorrow, the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Engineering (UPD COE) inaugurated its pioneering Engineering Library Learning Commons<\/strong> on March 28, 2025<\/strong>, at the Engineering Library II building. This transformative project marks the establishment of the first-ever standalone Learning Commons building<\/strong> in UP Diliman\u2014a technologically enhanced, social learning space designed to foster interaction, creativity, and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ribbon-cutting ceremony<\/strong> was led by COE Dean Dr. Maria Antonia N. Tanchuling<\/strong>, together with Vice President for Development Dr. Daniel C. Peckley, Jr.<\/strong>, representing UP President Atty. Angelo A. Jimenez<\/strong>; Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Maria Vanessa Lusung-Oyzon<\/strong>, representing UPD Chancellor Atty. Edgardo Carlo L. Vistan II<\/strong>; Head Librarian Ms. Sharon Maria S. Esposo-Betan<\/strong>; and former UP President Atty. Danilo C. Concepcion<\/strong>. Also joining the ceremony were former UPD Chancellor Dr. Fidel R. Nemenzo<\/strong>, former DOST Secretary Dr. Estrella F. Alabastro<\/strong>, PhilSA Director Dr. Ariel C. Blanco<\/strong>, UP Alumni Engineers President Engr. Manfred M. Guangko<\/strong>, and UPERDFI Executive Director Engr. Alfonso A. Aliga, Jr.<\/strong>, all distinguished COE alumni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 200 guests<\/strong> composed of UP System and UPD officials, COE faculty and staff, former deans, student organization representatives, deans and head librarians from other UP units, and library and industry partners gathered to witness the formal launch of this milestone academic infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Vision Realized: From Single Room to Two-Storey Innovation Hub<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In her welcome remarks, Dean Tanchuling<\/strong> traced the long and collaborative journey of the Learning Commons\u2014from its conceptualization as early as 2015<\/strong> during the term of Chancellor Nemenzo<\/strong> and President Concepcion<\/strong>, to its completion under Chancellor Vistan<\/strong> and President Jimenez<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt took a while, but finally, the Library Learning Commons is here,\u201d Dean Tanchuling said. \u201cThis is more than a library\u2014it is a dynamic and inclusive academic home where ideas are born, connections are made, and the next generation of engineers are empowered.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

She credited the project\u2019s realization to support from the Department of Budget and Management<\/strong>, the Office of the President<\/strong>, and the UPD Administration<\/strong>, which funded everything from construction to interior finishing and digital infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defining the Commons: A Modern Space for Learning, Wellness, and Creativity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Sharon Esposo-Betan<\/strong>, Head of the UP Engineering Library, shared the evolution of the Learning Commons from a single-room facility inaugurated in 2010<\/strong> to today\u2019s cutting-edge two-storey academic and social hub<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Commons now features:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Academic Discussion Rooms<\/strong> for group learning and scholarly engagement<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Collaborative Workstations<\/strong> with productivity tools and internet access<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Makerspace and Creative Studio<\/strong> equipped with 3D printers and prototyping tools<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Faculty Co-working Spaces<\/strong> fitted with ergonomic furniture and smartboards<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Wellness Room<\/strong> with massage chairs and a pantry for faculty and student mental breaks<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Exhibit and Art Space<\/strong> to showcase student and faculty works<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Coming soon<\/em>: Library Caf\u00e9 and Garden<\/strong> designed for rest, socialization, and rejuvenation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
